Can People Be Possessed - Part 1

I have asserted in the past that porn addicts are possessed by evil/unclean spirits without giving anything more than my own observations. I have spent quite some time researching this subject and I will present this information. I will take you through this step-by-step, so you can understand where I’m coming from. You can draw your own conclusions as to what is taught by early church apostles and prophets.

Based on what I’ve heard over the years from the LDS and based on what I used to believe myself, it seems that when “possession” is talked about, it is thought of in one or two views. First, that when a person is possessed by an evil spirit, it will be rather obvious as in demonic possession; Linda Blair comes to mind in the “Exorcist.” The second one is that when the scriptures talk about being “possessed” it is in being possessed like an object is possessed as property.

Alma 34:34
Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.

It seems that the interpretation of this scripture by many LDS is that this possession is of the property type; something like a slave is possessed by his master. (This is what I thought). But first, some background on the types of evil spirits out there. There are two sources of evil spirits.

We know that one third of the hosts of heaven were cast out for rebellion and became the Devil and his angels. Brigham Young, Orson Pratt, James E. Faust among many others, all taught this. (Journal of Discourses [JD] 3:358, 13:63, 14:92, Conference Report [CR], Oct 1989, Pg. 42). What I didn’t realize until I read through different books written by early church leaders was that this one-third didn’t include the unclean or foul spirits written about in the scriptures.

“Many spirits of the departed, who are unhappy, linger in lonely wretchedness about the earth, and in the air, and especially about their ancient homesteads, and the places rendered dear to them by the memory of former scenes. The more wicked of these are the kind spoken of in Scripture, as "foul spirits," "unclean spirits," spirits who afflict persons in the flesh, and engender various diseases in the human system. They will sometimes enter human bodies, and will distract them, throw them into fits, cast them into the water, into the fire, etc. They will trouble them with dreams, nightmare, hysterics, fever, etc. They will also deform them in body and in features, by convulsions, cramps, contortions, etc., and will sometimes compel them to utter blasphemies, horrible curses, and even words of other languages. If permitted, they will often cause death. Some of these spirits-are adulterous, and suggest to the mind all manner of lasciviousness, all kinds of evil thoughts and temptations.” (Parley P. Pratt, “Key to the Science of Theology, Pg. 110)

“We receive revelation from Heaven, you receive your revelations from every foul spirit that has departed this life, and gone out of the bodies of mobbers, murderers, highwaymen, drunkards, thieves, liars, and every kind of debauched character, whose spirits are floating around here, and searching and seeking whom they can destroy; for they are the servants of the devil….” (Brigham Young, JD 13:281)

“…Everyone knows that confusion does not come from the Father, nor from the Son. Does it come from the Holy Ghost? Everyone of you will answer, “No.” Where does it come from? It comes from the author of confusion, and is produced by those who rebel against God and against His authority. There were many who did this formerly, and they form part of that hell which brother Wells was talking about. Although those men and women are dead, they have a good deal of power; their spirits have power over us when we render ourselves subject to them; their spirits are busy at work. They are diligent in performing the work of destruction and confusion; they go at that work the very moment their spirits leave their bodies.” (President Heber C. Kimball, JD 4:273)

“All the wicked who are entirely overcome by these malicious spirits will have the heavenly principle of love wholly Eradicated from their minds, and they will become angels to these infernal fiends, being captivated by them, and compelled to act as they act. They cannot extricate themselves from their power, nor ward off the fiery darts of their malicious tormentors.” (Orson Pratt, “The Seer,” Vol. 1, pg. 156)

I have several more quotes, but I think this is enough.

"I have come to know that thoughts, like water, will stay on course if we make a place for them to go. Otherwise, our thoughts follow the course of least resistance, always seeking the lower levels. Probably the greatest challenge and the most difficult thing you will face in mortal life is to learn to control your thoughts. In the Bible it says, as a man ‘thinketh in his heart, so is he’ (Prov. 23:7). One who can control his thoughts has conquered himself. As you learn to control your thoughts, you can overcome habits, even degrading personal habits. You can gain courage, conquer fear, and have a happy life. "
