Finding Peace

John 14:27 — Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Matthew 11:28 — Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Doctrine and Covenants 19:23 — Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
These have become some of my favorite scriptures. Through accepting President Hinckley's challenge to reread the Book of Mormon, being led to the LDS Addiction Recovery Program at about the same time, and seeking to come unto Christ through more sincere prayer, I am finding more peace than I have ever known. Our Savior is truly the Prince of Peace. He sustains me through adversities and has delivered me from dangers both physical and spiritual.

I used to live in fear, making decisions contrary to what I felt was right and blaming others for my problems. Although I had felt of my Savior's love at times, I fell for Satan's lies that repentance was just too hard and painful and I didn't really believe that Christ could and would save me from my sins.

I am grateful for His gently leading me and for the trials that have brought me closer to Him. Turning to Christ is hard and painful, but the peace and joy that come far outweigh the pain and can endure while the pain is soon forgotten.

There really is peace for those who come unto Christ!

"J R, welcome and thank you for your post. The scriptures you quoted have become some of my favorites as well. I think as we become further ensnared in our addiction our souls face such turmoil every day because we are doing things that we know are not right and we know they don't really make us happy. We don't really, deep down, want to do the things we're doing, yet we keep doing them. And so for me, the peace that has come from not being torn between two masters and doing what I know is right, has been incredible. Just recently I have noticed myself slipping in resolve and the thing that's helped me recommit more than anything has been a desire to just always feel peace. That is such a great feeling. After years of turmoil the Savior's peace is such an amazing blessing."
